JOHN E. BUNDY

b. 1853- d. 1933/ American

John Elwood Bundy was an American Impressionist painter. He studied briefly in Indianapolis, but primarily was considered self taught. In 1888 he became the head of the Earlham College Art Department where he taught drawing and painting. After 8 years he left to pursue painting full time. He went on to become Richmond’s premiere artist and was the dean of the Richmond Group. He was also one of the founders of the Art Association of Richmond. 

Bundy has given great contributions to the art community of Richmond with his experience as a teacher, mentor, art patron and as well as his career as a painter. His legacy lives on as his work is still represented locally at locations such as Morrisson-Reeves, Richmond Community Schools, Earlham College and Indiana University East. His work is also included in many private collections such as Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Indiana State Museum and the Richmond Art Museum.
